Barnfield Jiu Jitsu, established in 2024 by Black Belt Matthew Tuttey, is built around good training, mutual respect and a genuinely welcoming atmosphere. We want the mats to feel approachable to complete beginners while still offering the depth, challenge and quality that more experienced practitioners value.
Barnfield Jiu Jitsu was established in 2024 to provide a welcoming environment for students to train. Barnfield runs its BJJ programme alongside the Kickboxing and MMA programmes operated by Spirit Dojo Legacy under Paul 'Semtex' Daley. Our sessions are designed to help people improve at their own pace, build confidence and enjoy learning.
Matthew Tuttey started training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu in 2009 in Bahrain under Alliance black belt Reza Monfaradi. He competed regionally in events including the Abu Dhabi World Pro and the Asian Super Cup, reaching purple belt before returning to the UK.
Back in the UK, Matthew continued training under Alliance black belt Lee Bown at Amber Valley MMA, who awarded him his black belt in 2023. Matthew began coaching more formally in 2018 at Spirit Dojo Legacy, having also led sessions earlier in Bahrain.
Barnfield Jiu Jitsu reflects Matthew’s aim to create a welcoming and friendly place to train, giving both beginners and experienced students a supportive environment in which to learn and improve.
Lineage: Mitsuyo Maeda – Carlos Gracie Sr. – Rolls Gracie – Romero Cavalcanti – Lee Bown – Matthew Tuttey
Hygiene: It is important that you keep good personal hygiene. Ensure that you and your clothing are clean. Never wear shoes on the mats and always wear shoes off the mats. Fingernails and toenails should be trimmed. Do not train if you are feeling unwell or have any skin infections. No food or drink allowed on the mats.
Attitude: Our gym is a friendly and welcoming environment for everyone to train, so please be respectful.
Coaching discretion: Coaching staff reserve the right to remove any student from class at their discretion.
Punctuality: Please ensure that you arrive with plenty of time to be ready for class.
Listen to your coaches: The coaches are there to help you through class, so please make sure that you are listening when they are explaining techniques.
Safety first: Tap early and often to prevent injuries occurring. Stop immediately if your partner taps.
No egos: Leave your egos at the door. Be open to learning and losing as that is all part of the journey.
Be considerate when sparring: We are not here to hurt each other but rather to learn and enjoy this sport. Be safe, controlled and considerate when sparring, especially with less experienced students.
Proper attire: Always wear the correct clothing. We operate a four-layers rule, i.e. proper underwear below your gi pants or no gi shorts. Nobody likes surprises.
Stay humble: Be humble in winning and gracious in losing.
